Year 3/4s Living Like Jesus
The Year 3/4 students have been recontextualising the life of Jesus with a series of inquiry-based lessons. Beginning with “How did Jesus live?” students explored the environment that Jesus lived in by looking at modern-day photographs of the Holy Land and writing about the living conditions. Students saw how tough the terrain was and the lack of luxury items. “They didn’t even have windows or an air conditioner,” said a few of the students. It was wonderful for the students to recognise the places in the modern-day photographs with the places they have been reading about.
To support their understanding further, students made flatbread to eat for lunch and huts to live in using materials found on the schoolyard. “The bread was actually so delicious I made it again at home for the family,” said Lindsay. “I’m keeping my hut to play in at recess time,” Seth said.
The following week, students explored “Where did Jesus live?” by learning about the names and features of the historic places where Jesus travelled by searching Google Earth. “He went to so many places that were far apart. There were no cars, so it must have been tiring,” said Samantha.
To further support their understanding of the historic places, students were involved in a scavenger hunt using QR codes that were hidden around the school. Students scanned the QR code which took them to photographs of different towns, regions and water landmarks in the Holy Land. The children took a screenshot which they use to label on a map, along with their importance. Students really embraced the technology of iPads and QR codes to recontextualise the life of Jesus.
